Gina Torres Biography
Gina Torres was born in Manhattan, New York City, in the Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital on 25th April 1969. She is the third of three children born to parents of multiracial Cuban descent. Her father worked for the New York Daily News and for La Prensa as a typesetter.
Gina Torres’ first foray into the arts was as a singer and she attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia Hight School of Music and Art and Performing Arts in New York City. She is a mezzo soprano but also trained in jazz and performed in the gospel choir. Although she applied to and was accepted by several colleges, she couldn’t afford to attend and so persued a dream of permorming instead.
Gina has appeared in a number of notable TV series and won an ALMA Award in 2001 for outstanding leading actress for her role in Cleopatra 2525. She was also nominated in 2004 for the International Press Academy’s Golden Satellite Award for her supporting role as Jasmine in Angel.
Her work isn’t restricted to TV though and she has appeared in one of the biggest movie franchises of all time as Cas in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix: Revolutions.
One of her best known TV roles was as Zoe in the much loved but short lived scifi TV series Firefly and she reprised that role for the Firefly based movie, Serenity in 2005.
As well as her principal cast role on Suits, Gina has also been seen recently in the critically acclaimed Hannibal as Bella Crawford.

While filming The Matrix Reloaded, she met actor Laurence Fishburne who played Morpheus. The got engaged in 2001 and on 22nd September 2002 they were married at The Cloisters Museum in New York City. Their first child, a daughter was born in June 2007.
